Happy HEART day!

First of all, I want to apologize for being MIA from this page! We’ve had quite the busy, busy year (both at school and at home).

February is Heart Month! We have taken this week to learn all about  the most important organ in our bodies: OUR HEARTS! We worked on our reading strategies as we read various interesting facts about how our hearts work and how to keep them  healthy. We also made Valentine cards for the children in the Heart Center at Children’s Hospital. Today we were thrilled to hear from a “real” author as well; Lori Jones (President of The Children’s Heart Foundation, heart mom, and author of Riley’s Heart Machine).

Lori shared with us a little bit about the process of becoming an author. She shared with us the importance of following our “hearts” and never giving up (like Dr. Seuss whose books were rejected 27 times before they were published!) She also talked to us about our 2 hearts: the one that pumps blood to our body and the other one that we control and fill with courage, friendship, determination, and caring thoughts and actions. We learned that, like Riley (her daughter that has a heart machine – pace maker), we are all special and unique.  It’s so important to be kind and compassionate to others no matter what differences they have. The students also learned that it’s important for us to embrace our differences and be proud of who we are! Thank you Mrs. Jones for such an inspirational message!

Happy HEART day!! :)
